2018 DUO SWEDEN FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

1. General Description

DUO-Sweden Fellowship Program was established in 2010 with the aim of promoting exchanges of people between Sweden and Asian countries (the 21 Asian countries: including Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, Myanmar, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) on a balanced basis. In this respect, DUO-Sweden requires that a PAIR (two persons) of students be exchanged in an academic cooperative arrangement. Definitions of students are as below:

  • Students: undergraduate and graduate students who are currently enrolled in universities

N.B.: All applicants shall maintain their “student status” at the time of application until the time they are engaged in the exchange, and the scholarship is only available for those who will study fulltime during their exchange period.

1. 1 Eligibility

Due to this unique nature of this program, in order to be eligible, the following are required:

Your exchange fulfills all three requirements below:

  • An educational institution in Sweden (home institution) and an educational institution in Asia (host institution) have established an academic cooperative arrangement/inter-institutional agreement; and
  • The Swedish home institution has selected an EU national student enrolled at the home institution to send to the Asian host institution, and such selection has been accepted by the Asian host institution; and
  • The same Asian host institution has selected an Asian student enrolled at the host institution to send to the Swedish home institution, and such selection has been accepted by the same Swedish home institution.

1.2 The Duration and the Amount of the DUO-Sweden Fellowships

DUO-Sweden 2018/2019 is for exchange projects, which will start from August 2018 and end before September 2019 to avoid duplication of implementation period of exchange projects selected by DUO-Sweden in the ensuing years. The selection of DUO-Sweden 2018/2019 is made ONLY once a year. In this respect, those who are planning to exchange in Spring Semester of 2019 (January-August 2019) shall apply for DUO-Sweden 2018/2019.

The duration of fellowship is limited to one semester (or 4 months, whichever comes earlier). The amount of the fellowships is standardized as follows:

  • 3,500 Euros for Asian student and 3,500 Euros for Swedish students in a pair, in high income country. For Middle and Low income countries the Asian student get 4,000 Euros and the Swedish student get 3,000 Euros.

The duration of exchange should be at least one semester and the scholarship is only available for those studying fulltime (minimum 24 ECTS/16 weeks). Exchange of less than one semester is NOT allowed. If a semester is longer than 4 months in the visiting institution, fellowship will be given for 4 months.

(A definition of fulltime study in Sweden is 30 ECTS credits per semester, which is in general 20 weeks.)

In the event that a student exchange lasts for a fewer number of weeks than granted, then the scholarship will be adjusted on a pro-rata basis and repayment of the funds provided will be required.

2. Application Procedure

2.1 Who Applies?

The educational institution in Sweden applies on behalf of both institutions and people who are to participate in the exchange. Asian institutions in partnership with Sweden institutions shall cooperate fully with Swedish institutions in supplying precise information of Asian applicants. Dear Sir/Madam,

Warm greetings from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya, Indonesia.

ITS as one of the best research universities in Indonesia would like to invite your students, academic, and non-academic staffs to participate in the Community and Technological Camp (CommTECH) Camp Highlight 2018 which will take place in Surabaya Indonesia on 9 – 21 July 2018. Designed as a platform to discuss and solve local problems, we modified this program into a 13-day program integrating new concepts and innovations. The participants will be challenged to critically solve real problems using a project based model. It becomes even more attractive because at the end of the program, all participants will have an opportunity to present their project and ideas which were developed during the course of the program in front of a wider audience.

CommTECH program is a short course program designed to facilitate and share better understanding of complex issues related with the intertwining of societal and technological problems, especially in Indonesia. It is also a platform to open up an opportunity to exchange ideas and to develop a mutual vision for the future of our community. Under the theme, “Solving Local Problems with Global Knowledge”, this program provides courses and discussions on particular  topics, visitation and discussion with government and non-government agencies, society engagement, Indonesian Language courses, learning traditional music and dances, visit to main tourist destinations, and for sure tasting delicious Indonesian food.

The good news is ITS provides full and partial scholarships for participants from different institutions and countries to join this program.

2018 Asia Summer Program, Dongseo University, Busan, Korea

The ASP is a three-week credit-based program offering students a unique opportunity to learn in a highly international environment. We have selected 52 courses from 31 universities in 12 countries for students to choose among. All courses at the ASP are taught by faculty members of participating universities. You can find more information about the program and its course at the program website (http://www.asp2018.com).

-Program Period:  July 9th ? July 27th, 2018 (July 8th: Arrival day / July 28th: Departure day)

-Location:  Dongseo University is located in Busan, Korea. Participants should arrive in and depart from Busan (most likely at Gimhae International Airport or Busan Train Station).

-Schedule:  Program details can be found on the website.

-Courses and credits:  Students should take two courses and earn 4 credits through the program. Dongseo University will issue a transcript for each student showing their level of achievement. Because all courses at ASP 2018 will be taught in English, a sufficient level of English proficiency is expected for participants.

-Course Registration:  Students should refer to the information about courses at the website. In the application form, they should choose one course from Group A (taught from 9:30 to 12:00) and one course from Group B (taught from 13:30-16:00). We expect courses to have between 15-20 students each. Given the number of students participating and their various preferences, it may not be possible to assign every student his or her first choice. As a result, we request that students rank their top-10 choices in Group A and top-10 choices in Group B. They should write numbers (1,2,3,…, 9,10) in the blank for each Group in the application form. This will help us to assign them their most preferred available course. The course assignments will be made on a first-come-first-served basis, so students who submit their application forms early will have the best chance of being assigned their highest ranked courses. In the event that too few students list a given course among their preferences, the course will be cancelled. Students assigned to a course that is cancelled will be reassigned to their next course choice.

-Program Registration:  To join the ASP, students should submit a completed application form to a representative at their home university, who may assess each student’s suitability for the program. In the “Registration #’ box (page 1) of the application form, please write the order in which applications are received. The application forms should then be sent together to DSU by e-mail (international@dongseo.ac.kr) by a representative of the home university. Please note that we don’t accept students’ personal applications.

-Registration Fee:  800 USD (This covers tuition, class materials, airport pick-up and drop-off, three week’s dormitory accommodations, three meals each weekday, and program-related activities)

-Fee Payment:  Participants should deposit their registration fee into an account of their home university. DSU will provide banking information to the home university so that the fees collected may be sent together to an account of DSU. This procedure reduces the banking fees incurred through the international transfer of funds.

-Optional Tour: Participants can sign up for an optional one-day tour on Saturday, July 21st, for an additional fee of 100 USD. This tour includes Gimhae Gaya Theme Park and Lotte Water Park as well as lunch at a Korean traditional restaurant.

-Arrival and Departure Dates:  Participants should arrive in Busan on July 8th , (Sunday), and depart from Busan on July 28th (Saturday). Accommodation will be provided from July 8th to 28th., and pick-up and drop-off services will be provided on those two days. The dormitory situation at DSU makes it difficult to extend the period of stay. After submitting their application forms, participants are urged to quickly reserve their flight tickets.

-Deadlines:  Application deadline: April 15th, 2018 ; Deadline for registration fee payment: May 31th, 2018

-Visa:  A Tourist Visa is the simplest type to receive for the Republic of Korea. We request that participants consult the Korean Embassy nearest them regarding the visa application procedure. If an invitation letter is required for the visa application, Dongseo University will send one to participants who have paid their registration fee.
